Alternative Minimalist Visions of Language

چکیده

1. Goals and constraints The primary goal of modern linguistic theory (at least in the circles I inhabit) is an explanation of the human language capacity and how it enables the child to acquire adult competence in language. Adult competence in turn is understood as the ability (or knowledge) to creatively map between sound and meaning, using a rich combinatorial system – the lexicon and grammar of the language. An adequate theory must satisfy at least three crucial constraints, which I will call the Descriptive Constraint, the Learnability Constraint, and the Evolutionary Constraint.

Optimality Theory and the Minimalist Program

The Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995, 2000) and Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993, 2004) are not alternative theories logically inconsistent with each other. Optimality Theory is a theory of how universal constraints of grammar interact (Prince and Smolensky 1993, Grimshaw 2005). Minimalism, as Chomsky notes (2000:41), is a research program –not a theory– investigating to what extent...

Language learning and language culture in a changing world

To  communicate  effectively,  learners  have  to  become  proficient  in  both  the  language  and  the culture of the target language.  Being aware of socio-cultural frameworks does not mean that as an outcome of instruction learners have to become "native-like," but an awareness of L2 cultural norms can allow learners to make their own informed choices of how to become competent and astute l...

Morphological Agreement in Minimalist Grammars

Minimalist Grammars provide a useful tool for modeling natural language syntax by defining grammar fragments in a very precise way. As a formalization of the Minimalist Program, they can accommodate linguistic analyses from the field of generative syntax. However, they have no machinery for encoding agreement; while morphology can be simulated by multiplying lexical items, there is no systemati...

The Scribble Reader An Alternative to S-expressions for Textual Content

For decades, S-expressions have been one of the fundamental advantages of languages in the Lisp family — a major factor in shaping these languages as an ideal platform for symbolic computations, from macros and meta-programming to symbolic data exchange and much more. As convenient as this minimalist syntax has proven to be, it is unfitting for dealing with textual content. In this paper we des...

Electrical Activity of Selected Shank Muscles When Using Minimalist Shoes during Single-Leg Landing Task

Nowadays, light and minimal shoes have been used by athletes in various types of sports activities in order to be in a position close to barefoot position. But its effect on the electrical activity of the shank muscles is not well understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the electrical activity of selected shank muscles when using minimalist shoes, normal shoes and barefo...
